Questions About Eye Surgery For Dogs

Nancy asks…

How much does it cost in Connecticut for cherry eye surgery for dogs?

My bulldog is 9 months old and we think she has cherry eye. How much does it cost in Connecticut to do the surgery and what are the procedures??

admin answers:

The cost varies, of course, but I wouldn't shop for surgery unless I had a couple thousand in the bank.

Michael asks…

How much did you pay for your dogs cherry eye surgery?

My dog (engl. Bulldog) has a cherry eye and I would like to know how much most of the people paid. I have two estimates and for some reason they are both soooooooooooooo different (in price).... I am just curious. Thank you.
My dog had it happen before and it was fixed, but I did not have to pay for it (the breeder still did). I have 2 estimates and they differ almost $1000

admin answers:

It costs about $300.00 because you have to pay for blood work, anesthesia, the cherry eye surgery, and a recovery room so that should equal up to $300. Tell your bulldog i said hi and good luck with the cherry eye

Lisa asks…

Is there Laser eye surgery for dogs?

My dog is 12 years old and she getting cateracts on her eyes and im afraid she is going to go blind soon so i was wondering if they do laser eye surgery on them like they do on humans to remove the cateracts?

admin answers:

Yes, at some veterinary schools and veterinary ophthalmologists laser eye surgery is available for various diseases. Search the internet for "canine" laser eye surgery. Or visit the vet school's website in your state.

However cataracts can be non-painful and sometimes do not progress much. My 15 year old cat has had a cataract for over 4 years and is only now starting to lose her sight over it. Talk with your vet about options, and ask for a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist if you are still concerned. He/she can guide you best about cost and pain associated with treatment versus cost and benefit to your older dog.

Betty asks…

Is the price for dog cataract eye surgery the same everything in Toronto Ontairo?

I live in Brampton Ontario and I was quoted $1,500 too do just' the surgery. I'm just curious as too if this is the same price everything in Ontario as I have to get this done for my dog who has them in both eyes and is ten years old...?

admin answers:

George asks…

Please. Where Can My Dog Get Eye Surgery?

I have a 4 year old American Eskimo Dog. When he was a puppy, my other dog (Golden Retriever) accidentally bit his eye while playing. Now, my American Eskimo is completely blind in his right eye. After we took him to the emergency room, his eye was bloody but slowly clearing up. The surgeon told us that his eye would be blind and would eventually fall out. Unfortunately, at that time, I was young and my parents do not speak English so there was little I could do.

Now, his blind eye is extremely large and bulging. My parents are disgusted at it and find it very unappealing. I was wondering what I should do? I really don't want to give him up. He's been with us for four years and he's a great friend. I have heard of dog eye removal and glass eyes for pets but I can only find limited information.

Please write down any information. Thank you.

Additional Information:
Ever since the accident, he has become very aggressive towards people other than my family and especially towards other dogs. I was wondering if there was a way to make him less aggressive.
I also wanted to know how much it would cost for dog eye removal surgery.
I've taken Puffy (that's his name) to the vet yearly but it is not the original vet that operated on him when he was first blinded. I asked my current vet about the eye and he said that it does not seem to be bothering him so it should be fine. Overall, Puffy is living normally, but it's just the appearance that bothers my parents. I am going off to college soon and I fear that they will give him away if I leave.
His eye is not a typical blind eye. It is actually bulging out of its socket. Its completely dark and swollen, nearly double his good eye. It just seems like he's getting worse.

Where can I contact a behaviorist?
Here are pictures of Puffy from oldest to newest.

admin answers:

Surgery would cost at least a few hundred & depends entirely on what your vet charges. Glass eye would be very expensive & rare & difficult to find. They do fine with no eye in the socket. It isn't as gross as it sounds. Your dog is acting out cuz he has limited vision now & might be in pain from his eye. Removing the eye might help but he might be upset around other dogs due to his vision. Ppl should always approach slowly & cautiously around him so he knows where they are.
