Your Questions About Lasik Lazy Eye

Joseph asks…

Can Lasik eye surgery be performed on a lazy eye, and what's the average cost?

I'm thinking about having it done on my right eye.

admin answers:

Lasik can be performed on a lazy eye but I only recommend it if you are wearing glasses or contacts and your corrected vision is really better -because lasik is performed for visual benefits and not because you can't live with the idea to have 5 D hypermetropia-

Sandy asks…

can LASIK eye surgery treat lazy eyes?

i have a lazy eye. just my left eye. im wearing contact lenses and sometimes glasses. however i want my eyesight to improve without wearing either contacts or eyeglasses. ive heard of lasik eye surgery and as per my doctor it isnt advisable. do you think lasik eye surgery would still work even for lazy eyes?

admin answers:

If your doctor says that LASIK is inadvisable for you...then listen to him/her...they know your eyes best...better than anyone out here.

This is what my LASIK/PRK surgeon told me and my husband:

LASIK will only correct you to the best vision that glasses or contacts can...so if in your contacts you can only see 20/30...that's all the improvement that LASIK will do. LASIK cannot be guaranteed to reach that level of correction, let alone go beyond.

And an excerpt from the below link:

Can Lasik eye surgery help ‘lazy eye’?

For patients suffering from amblyopia, Lasik eye surgery may help some adults see better but it cannot ‘cure’ the brain’s inability to see. Lasik eye surgery cannot repair the way that the retinal cells send images to your brain. Lasik eye surgery cannot go back and correct the normal neurological connections that failed to develop in an infant due to lack of light stimulation. What Lasik eye surgery can do is help to reduce nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism which helps to insure that the image is in the correct position on the retina. But this does not guarantee better vision at any price. Be sure to have a frank talk with your doctor prior to Lasik eye surgery to see if he or she feels that you will have vision improvement. Don’t be afraid to get a second and third opinion from different Lasik eye surgeons to see if they feel that Lasik eye surgery is a valid option for treating amblyopia. It’s easy to find someone who will be willing to take your hard earned money. Make sure that you feel that they’ve earned your trust and that they truly feel that Lasik eye surgery will improve your vision.

I hope this helps, but only you and your eye doctor can make the decision if LASIK will help in your individual case.

Good luck :)

Sharon asks…

Does Lasik fix Lazy Eye? Help PLEASE!?

I went to Yaldo Eye ceneter in Dearborn MI. today for a consultation and they doct told me that the lasik should fix my lazy eye..I went to doctor for muscel surgery but I do need lasik my appointment is tommrow...Is the doctor trying to just get me in for lasik? Because I keep hearing that lasik cant help a slight lazy eye...Help PLEASE! THANKS

admin answers:

I always hate to second guess the doctor that has actually seen the patient. If your lazy eye is caused by refractive error, LASIK could help. I have had patients that had a lot of astigmatism or hyperopia in one eye and did not tend to wear correction because they saw so well with the other eye. I have felt like they could be helped by permanently eliminating the refractive error. I think that you should go to the LASIK evaluation and listen to what they say. If it all doesn't make sens to you, get a second opinion from someone who actually can look at you and fully evaluate your situation.
