Questions About Lasik Vision Correction Surgery

Jenny asks…

Are you now allowed to be a pilot in the Air Force despite having had LASIK vision correction surgery?

I saw on the NASA website that the astronaut candidate program is now allowing those who have had corrective vision surgery to apply (as long as it has been at least a year since surgery.) Does this apply to the Air Force now also?

admin answers:

The last i checked the Air Force would not allow you to be a pilot with any corrected surgery. Here is what is posted on the AF website. Your uncorrected distance vision can be no worse than 20/50 in either eye, and your uncorrected close vision must be 20/20 in both eyes. You cannot become a pilot if you are colorblind or have had your vision corrected with laser surgery.

Ruth asks…

lasik eye surgery/vision correction surgery?

I was wondering how old you have to be to lasik eye surgery or any vision correction surgery. I'm 15 years old but my vision is just so bad its something like 8.25/8 i've had glasses since kindergarden and i hate having glasses. also how much would it cost?
thanks in advance

admin answers:

Generally they want your vision to be stable (no changes in prescription) for at least a year, preferably longer. By this time, a person is usually in their early 20's (some people's vision never really completely stabilizes). You are pretty close to the limit of what they can fix using lasik, there may be other procedures that would be better for you. By the time you are old enough, they may have improved the procedures as well. Anyway, you could try contacts until then.

Robert asks…

How long before I can get LASIK vision correction surgery in the US Navy?

Lets say that I am enlisting as a HM E-3, and get orders to FMTB at Pendleton for a 8404 (FMF Field Medical Service Technician) rating after A-School. I've taken some pre-op exams here and am very qualified, but I cant afford the surgery, and plan on using the navy to pay for it so I can go to spec ops after a few years as an 8404. I got a 93 on ASVAB and am physically qualified for the SO rating, just cant see very well (400). So about when would I expect to be able to get the surgery, assuming that I DO get the chance to go to FMTB for 8404? Thanks everyone I really appreciate all your help

Just want to let you know that I am very impressed with all of the job titles ,capital letters and numbers you included in your question. I have no idea what the answer is.

Donald asks…

Is lasik surgery safe vision correction for adults age over above 30 years?

admin answers:

John asks…

Have anyone ungergone any vision correction surgery like LASIK or any other?

How was it like?painful?how much time did the whole process took?what was the difference after the surgery?how much time back did u do that?

admin answers:

I work for a LASIK surgeon. Even though I have not had the surgery, most patients would tell you little or no pain, a slight scratchy feeling like a piece of sand is in your eye.

Depending on your prescription, the better the Rx, the better the results. I have seen patients after surgery with 20/20 or 20/15. Not too shabby.

The procedure takes about 15 minutes from start to finish. The most time taken is prepping the patient. The actual laser work takes only a few moments.

Hope that answers your questions.
