Your Questions About Lasik Large Pupils

Jenny asks…

As of 2 years ago, Lasik did not have the equipment to treat eyes with large pupils. Has this changed?

I knew an eye surgeon (cute but my friend's bf) and he explained to me that Lasik machinery had only been made to operate on normal/average eyes. He said that once the surgery becomes much more popular, it will be profitable for a company to design a system that can also work on (my) eyes with large pupils.

Obviously he knew what he was talking about, as a Lasik surgeon, but I am wondering whether since then this new equipment has been manufactured. Does anyone know?

admin answers:

There is wavefront lasik which increases the chances of success but as far as I know, there is nothing definetive and the odds of seeing disturbances such as halos and starbursts, as well as double vision is still quite a bit higher for people with larger pupils

Good luck!

Ken asks…

Lasik not good idea for people with big pupils?

I have really big pupils (the doctor never has to dilate them) and I believe I read somewhere that people with large pupils aren't necessarily good candidates for Lasik. Is this true?

admin answers:

There are more options available for treating patients with larger pupils as the ablation (treatment) zones are getting larger. However, you are correct that halos after surgery are more of a concern with large diameter pupils.

The amount of correction required, corneal thickness, pupil size, and laser type are all factors that must be considered to determine if you are an acceptable candidate for treatment.

Thomas asks…

How can you tell if you have larger than normal pupils?

The reason I ask is because I am contemplating lasik.

admin answers:

You could try looking at your own pupils and looking at your friend's pupils. But, if you are thinking about doing the Lasik, during the initial consultation, they are supposed to be checking if there are any reasons why you would not be a good candidate for the procedure. If your pupils are too large for the procedure, or any other issues, they should be honest enough to say so and not risk there being a bad outcome.

Carol asks…

How bad are the halos you can get from Lasik?

I have large pupils so I think if I got lasik there is a chance I would get the halos. Also I have astigmatism of something like 2.75ish. I wear progressives, which cause me to see double vision at night because of the distortion in the peripheral vision so would it really be that much worse if I got lasik and saw halos at night? Are the halos that you get unbearable? I know that for a lot of people they go away with time but my eyes are terrible, contact lens don't work for me because of my high astigmatism, etc. so I have a feeling I would be one of the unlucky ones to be stuck with halos permanently...

admin answers:

First, whoever told you that contacts wont work with severe astigmatism is WRONG. Check out http://www.specialty-lenses.com/astigmatism.html

Second, it geniunely depends on a person, but you're right- large pupils set you up for bad results. Aside from that, there are tons of risks to lasik surgery, the most dramatic (I believe) being severe dry eye- I always like to include http://www.dryeyezone.com/talk/showthread.php?t=53 as an example of what, exactly, can go wrong with lasik. Hundreds of people on that forum are the horror stories your surgeon wont mention.
